17 Injured in Lira–Aduku Highway Crash After Bus and Lorry Collision

LIRA CITY

Seventeen people sustained injuries following a road accident involving a Gulu University bus and a Fuso lorry at Bongcao Centre along the Lira–Aduku Highway in Lira City West Division.

According to the North Kyoga Regional Police, the accident occurred at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, when the two vehicles collided under circumstances that are still under investigation.

Police spokesperson SP Patrick Jimmy Okema said preliminary findings indicate that the Fuso lorry was transporting market vendors from Aduku Market towards Lira City at a relatively high speed. At the same time, a Gulu University Isuzu bus was joining the main highway from a feeder road after returning from a traditional marriage ceremony in Boke Ward.

The collision left 17 passengers with varying degrees of injuries, prompting emergency responders to rush the victims to Lira Regional Referral Hospital and Lira Midtown Clinic for treatment. Most of the injured were reported to be in stable condition, while authorities continued to establish the identities of all those involved.

Traffic police officers from Lira City West Division visited the scene, documented evidence, and arranged for both vehicles to be towed to the police parking yard pending inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV). Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash.

The accident has renewed concerns over road safety along the busy Lira–Aduku Highway, where heavy commercial traffic and public transport vehicles frequently share the road. Police have appealed to motorists to reduce speed, observe traffic rules, and exercise extra caution when joining major highways from feeder roads.
