Amolatar Leaders Demand Urgent Relief as Flooding Displaces Communities

Leaders in Amolatar District are calling for urgent government intervention as rising water levels continue to affect homes, farmland, roads and other essential infrastructure across the district.

The prolonged flooding has left many families struggling to maintain normal livelihoods, with some residents losing access to farmland and other sources of income.

Local leaders say the situation requires more than temporary assistance, arguing that affected communities need emergency relief as well as a long-term resettlement plan.

The flooding has particularly affected communities located in low-lying areas around Lakes Kyoga and Kwania.

Several roads and crossings have also been affected, making movement between communities increasingly difficult.

Kyoga County MP Geoffrey Ocen has called for scientific investigations into the causes of the continued rise of the lakes, saying a lasting solution requires authorities to understand the factors behind the persistent flooding.

Amolatar Woman Member of Parliament Agnes Auma Okao has called for temporary accommodation for displaced families while government works on a permanent solution.

Local leaders are also demanding compensation for residents who have lost land and livelihoods as a result of the prolonged flooding.

The district administration has warned that the continuing disaster is placing increasing pressure on local resources and requires a coordinated response from both central and local government.
