Amolatar Robbery Suspect Escapes After Motorcycle Crash, Two Sustain Broken Legs

A robbery suspect escaped from police custody after allegedly causing a motorcycle carrying him, a police officer and the complainant to crash near Acengryeny Primary School in Amolatar District.

The suspect, identified as Emunyo Bonny, had reportedly been arrested after allegedly snatching a bag containing Shs200,000 from Alibo Harriet, a clothes vendor from Alelangao B in Muntu Sub-county.

According to information surrounding the incident, Harriet was allegedly robbed at Tete Trading Centre before members of the public pursued the suspect. He reportedly escaped initially but was later traced and arrested after residents identified him.

Bonny was subsequently taken to Acengryeny Police Station together with the complainant.

During his transfer to Amolatar Central Police Station, the suspect allegedly attacked the motorcycle rider by jumping onto his neck and choking him. The motorcycle subsequently lost control and crashed near Acengryeny Primary School.

The crash left the police officer and complainant with broken legs, while Bonny reportedly sustained serious injuries.

Despite his injuries, the suspect allegedly attempted to take the police officer's firearm before crawling away from the scene and escaping.

The injured police officer and complainant were taken to Amolatar Health Centre IV for medical treatment.

Questions have also been raised over the circumstances surrounding the transfer. The complainant's husband, Olega Richard, reportedly said the family had been asked to provide Shs40,000 to facilitate the suspect's transfer to Amolatar Central Police Station. He said he managed to raise Shs20,000.

He further alleged that the suspect was not handcuffed before the journey.

Efforts to obtain a response from the Amolatar District Police Commander had not yielded a response at the time of the report.

Police are expected to continue efforts to locate the escaped suspect.
