Farmers in Lira City Receive Training on Improved Farming Methods and Seasonal Crop Selection
The initiative, conducted by a local farmers association, focused on equipping farmers with knowledge about modern farming practices, soil management, and choosing suitable crops based on seasonal weather conditions.
During the training held last week, farmers were guided on the importance of planting crops at the right time of the season to achieve better yields. The association encouraged farmers to consider factors such as rainfall patterns, soil type, and market demand when selecting crops.
The project also introduced farmers to improved farming techniques, including proper land preparation, the use of quality seeds, crop spacing, pest control, and better post-harvest handling methods.
Speaking during the training, a representative from the farmers association said the program was designed to help farmers move away from traditional methods that often result in low production.
"Our goal is to help farmers understand which crops perform best in different seasons and how they can apply better farming practices to increase their harvests," the representative said.
Farmers who participated in the program welcomed the initiative, saying the knowledge gained would help them make better decisions when planning their gardens.
"Before, many farmers planted without considering the season or the type of crop that suits the available conditions. This training has helped us understand how to plan better and improve our production," one farmer said.
Agriculture remains one of the main sources of livelihood for communities in Lira City and the wider Lango Sub-region, with farmers growing crops such as maize, cassava, beans, sunflower, rice, soybeans, and groundnuts.
The farmers association encouraged participants to continue sharing the knowledge with other farmers and to work together through farmer groups to access markets, agricultural inputs, and further training opportunities.
The project organizers said they hope the continued adoption of improved farming methods will contribute to increased food production, better incomes, and stronger agricultural development in Lira City.
