Lira City: 25-Year-Old Man Killed in Suspected Mob Justice After Alleged Burglary

Police in Lira City West Division are investigating the suspected mob killing of a 25-year-old self-employed man, identified as Alany Gerald, in Obutuwelo A Cell, Ojwina Ward C.

According to preliminary police findings, Alany and several other individuals allegedly broke into a home in the area while the occupants were asleep and stole household property.

Police say the group later returned to the same home, reportedly intending to steal more items. During the alleged second break-in, the homeowner reportedly caught Alany while his colleagues escaped.

Mob attack follows arrest

Police said Alany was initially beaten by members of the household before other community members reportedly joined the attack.

The assault resulted in his death, after which his body was allegedly dumped in the middle of a road within the neighbourhood.

The incident was reported to police by a concerned member of the public.

Officers from Lira City West Division, accompanied by homicide investigators and Scenes of Crime Officers, responded to the scene.

The scene was processed and documented, while statements were obtained from relevant witnesses.

Alany's body was subsequently taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

Police investigate both burglary and killing

North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson SP Patrick Jimmy Okema said investigations are focusing on both the alleged burglary and the circumstances surrounding Alany's death.

Police are also working to identify the other individuals who allegedly participated in the burglary, as well as those suspected of taking part in the fatal assault.

No arrests had been reported in connection with the killing at the time of the latest police update, although efforts to identify and apprehend suspects were ongoing.

Police condemn mob justice

Police have strongly condemned the use of mob justice and urged residents not to take the law into their own hands.

SP Okema called on members of the public to apprehend suspected offenders and hand them over to police so that investigations can be conducted and suspects taken through the proper judicial process.

The incident has renewed concerns about mob justice in Lira City, particularly where communities become angry over suspected theft and other criminal activities.

Police say residents can play an important role in fighting crime by providing information and cooperating with security agencies, but suspected offenders must be dealt with according to the law.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing. Alany Gerald was reportedly suspected of involvement in a burglary, but the allegations had not been tested in court before his death.
