Oyam Braces for Above-Normal Rains as Wet Season Intensifies

Residents of Oyam District have been urged to prepare for an increasingly wet season as the latest seasonal climate outlook predicts above-normal rainfall across the region from September through December 2026.

The Uganda Media Centre’s September–December 2026 seasonal climate outlook indicates that Oyam is currently experiencing intermittent rainfall, with more consistent rains expected to become established across the district by mid-September. The outlook projects that rainfall will intensify towards the peak of the season, expected between mid-October and November, with above-normal rainfall likely to continue through December. The forecast has raised the need for households, farmers and local authorities to take early precautions, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding, waterlogging and other weather-related risks. For farmers, the expected increase in rainfall could provide much-needed moisture for crops, but excessive rainfall may also cause damage to crops, soil erosion and difficulties during harvesting.

Residents have therefore been encouraged to monitor weather updates and plan agricultural activities carefully to reduce potential losses. Local authorities are also expected to remain vigilant in communities that could be affected by flooding or displacement, particularly where homes and farmland are located near wetlands, rivers and other low-lying areas. The anticipated rains could also affect roads and transportation, potentially making some rural routes difficult to access. Communities are being encouraged to report emerging hazards and follow guidance from local authorities and relevant disaster-management agencies.

As the rainy season approaches its peak, residents are advised to secure homes, clear drainage channels and avoid settling or conducting activities in areas prone to flooding. The climate outlook provides an opportunity for communities to prepare early rather than wait for extreme weather events to occur. Farmers, in particular, are encouraged to follow weather information when making decisions on planting, crop management and harvesting as rainfall conditions may vary throughout the season. With the forecast pointing to wetter-than-normal conditions through December, continued monitoring and early preparedness will be important in protecting livelihoods and reducing the impact of heavy rains across Oyam District.
