Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum Honoured for Innovation and Technology Contributions

Former Lira University Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum, has been recognised for his contribution to innovation, technology, research and academic transformation.

Prof. Dokotum was selected for the Innovation & Technology for Development Award at the 2026 SMEGAfrica Conference and Excellence Awards held in Nairobi.

The recognition highlighted his contribution to research, digital transformation, entrepreneurship and institutional innovation during his leadership at Lira University.

Advancing innovation at Lira University

During his tenure, Prof. Dokotum was associated with efforts to strengthen research and innovation at the university, including initiatives aimed at encouraging students and researchers to develop practical solutions to challenges affecting communities.

Lira University has increasingly positioned research, applied sciences and technology among its priorities, with innovation programmes covering areas such as artificial intelligence, digital applications, health innovations, agriculture and other technologies.

The university has also encouraged students and academic staff to move beyond theoretical research by developing solutions with potential social and economic impact.

Recognition of academic leadership

The award places a spotlight on the growing contribution of institutions in Northern Uganda to Uganda's innovation and knowledge economy.

Prof. Dokotum served as Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for two contract terms, covering the period from July 2016 to June 2026.

His tenure officially ended on June 30, 2026, after completing the maximum permitted contractual period. Lira University subsequently recognised his ten years of service and contribution to the institution's development.

A focus on technology and the future

The recognition comes at a time when Lira University is expanding its focus on applied sciences, technology and research.

The university's innovation agenda includes supporting research that can address community challenges while creating opportunities for students and researchers to develop practical technologies and enterprises.

For the Lango sub-region, such developments could strengthen the role of higher education institutions in driving digital transformation, entrepreneurship and locally developed solutions.

Prof. Dokotum's recognition therefore provides another spotlight on the potential of Northern Uganda's academic institutions to contribute to national and continental innovation.
