Three Local Leaders Detained During National Cleaning Day in Alebtong
Three local leaders were detained in Amugu Town Council after allegedly holding a meeting during the designated hours for the National Cleaning Day exercise.
Those detained include Gombolola Internal Security Officer Abura Joseph Olwit, Town Agent for Acek Ward Odongo Levi, and the LC1 Chairperson of Akisim Cell.
The three were reportedly taken into custody after authorities said a meeting had been organised during the period when residents and local leaders were expected to participate in the community cleaning exercise.
Meeting interrupted cleaning activities
Assistant Resident District Commissioner for Alebtong District Jimmy Okello confirmed that the GISO had called LC1 chairpersons to a meeting during the designated cleaning hours.
According to the authorities, holding the meeting at that time could prevent local leaders from participating in the exercise and mobilising residents to take part in the clean-up.
The National Cleaning Day exercise is conducted on the last Saturday of every month, with communities expected to dedicate the designated morning hours to cleaning public spaces and surrounding areas.
Cleaning exercise continues
Despite the detention of the three officials, the cleaning exercise reportedly continued across Amugu Town Council, with residents and other leaders taking part.
The initiative is intended to improve sanitation, promote community responsibility and encourage residents to regularly maintain their surroundings.
Local authorities have continued to call on residents, businesses and leaders to participate actively in the exercise.
Authorities warn against disrupting the programme
The incident has highlighted the importance of coordination between local leaders and authorities when organising activities that involve community members.
Authorities have urged leaders to respect official programmes and ensure that meetings and other activities do not interfere with activities designated for public participation.
The three officials were being held at Amugu Town Council Police Station as authorities handled the matter.
Further action will depend on the outcome of the investigations into the circumstances surrounding the meeting.
