Amach, Bal Pe and Aneka Piri Trading Centres Open New Markets for Lango Farmers
The rapid growth of trading centres such as Amach, Bal Pe and Aneka Piri is creating significant opportunities for farmers, traders and consumers across the Lango sub-region, with farmers saying the expanding commercial hubs are connecting them to bigger and more profitable markets.
The growth of the centres has increased the number of buyers seeking agricultural products, particularly sunflower, cassava and other crops produced by farmers in the surrounding communities. This has given farmers new opportunities to sell their produce while reducing the challenges of finding reliable markets.
Ogwal Tom, a farmer from Alito Sub-county in Kole District, said the growth of Aneka Piri has created opportunities that extend beyond the local market.
“Aneka Piri has opened international doors for us because we now have the opportunity to sell our products directly to international buyers,” Ogwal said.
He said the connection to larger markets has given farmers greater confidence to increase production because they can access buyers beyond their immediate communities.
Apio Docus, who deals in large quantities of sunflower and cassava, said the growth of Bal Pe has significantly increased the number of buyers coming to the area.
“The growth of Bal Pe has brought in so many buyers for my products. This has made the demand rise so high, hence increasing the need for more supply,” Apio said.
The increased demand for agricultural products is creating opportunities not only for farmers but also for produce dealers, transporters, retailers and other businesses involved in the agricultural value chain.
Farmers who previously struggled to find markets for their produce can now take advantage of the growing network of buyers. At the same time, buyers have greater access to agricultural products in larger quantities and from a wider network of producers.
The growth of Amach, Bal Pe and Aneka Piri is also transforming the economic activities of surrounding communities. New shops, restaurants, mobile money businesses, transport services and other enterprises are emerging to serve the increasing number of people visiting the centres.
However, stakeholders say the continued growth of the centres will require improved infrastructure, including better roads, storage facilities, electricity, water, sanitation and organized market spaces.
The expansion of these commercial centres demonstrates the growing importance of local markets in connecting Lango's farmers to wider opportunities. With continued investment and access to reliable markets, farmers and traders could further increase production, create employment and contribute to the economic development of the sub-region.
