Lira Regional Referral Hospital Welcomes 40 New Medical Interns
Lira Regional Referral Hospital has welcomed 40 new medical interns who have joined the facility for the 2026/2027 one-year internship programme.
The new cohort comprises medical doctors, nurses and pharmacists who will undertake supervised practical training as part of their professional development.
The interns were inducted and oriented to the hospital's systems, policies and professional expectations during a programme organised by the hospital's Human Resource Department.
Hospital leadership used the occasion to remind the interns that professionalism, accountability and respect for patients must remain at the centre of their work.
Interns cautioned against misconduct
Senior Executive Consultant Dr Andrew Odur urged the interns to take their training seriously and use the opportunity to develop their professional skills.
He cautioned them against substance abuse and insubordination, warning that such behaviour could affect both their professional performance and future careers.
The interns were also warned against unethical practices, particularly demanding money from patients or their caregivers.
Hospital management emphasised that patients seeking treatment should receive services without being subjected to financial demands by health workers.
Patient care and professionalism emphasised
The Senior Principal Nursing Officer, Sister Beatrice Akello, urged the interns to communicate effectively with patients and caregivers and to treat them with respect and dignity.
She also emphasised teamwork and proper handover of patients between health workers and shifts, saying effective communication is important for continuity and safety of care.
The interns were encouraged to maintain clean and safe working environments while observing professional standards throughout their placement.
Internship programme
The one-year programme will give the interns an opportunity to work alongside experienced health professionals while gaining practical experience in different areas of healthcare delivery.
At the end of the induction, the interns took their professional oath, committing themselves to uphold patient confidentiality, professional conduct and the principle of doing no harm.
Lira Regional Referral Hospital serves Lira City and several districts across the Lango Sub-region, making it an important training and referral centre for health professionals and patients in the region.
