Shs 60 Billion Infusion Sparks Fresh Optimism Across Lango Sub-Region
The Government of Uganda has accelerated its multi-billion post-conflict recovery intervention in the Lango sub-region, with Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja confirming that Shs 60.2 billion has successfully rolled out to revive rural economies.Addressing accountability questions and streamlining beneficiary verification, the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) announced that more than 12,000 households across the Lango, Acholi, and Teso sub-regions have already received funding to restock livestock. To sustain this economic momentum, the government has earmarked an additional Shs 100 billion for the next financial phase, marking one of the most substantial post-conflict livelihood interventions in the region’s recent history. A Direct Boost to Grassroots Wealth Creation This massive financial injection directly complements other ongoing wealth-creation initiatives, such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), which has already pumped over Shs 14 billion into Lira City alone to transition rural farmers from subsistence farming into commercial agriculture.Local authorities emphasize that expanding livestock production is exactly what the sub-region needs to address current service delivery imbalances and boost regional food security."Restoring our livestock capacity is not just about asset distribution; it is about bringing back the productive resilience of our rural communities," noted a regional economic planner. Alignment with Regional Infrastructure Growth The livestock and agricultural push comes at a time when Lango is positioning itself for a wider commercial transformation. Prominent regional leaders, including Lira City Woman MP and Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, continue to lobby for vital master projects, including the fast-tracking of free coffee seedlings and the upgrading of local infrastructure to minimize post-harvest losses.Additionally, local leaders are urging Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) to rigorously monitor all public projects to prevent the misappropriation of these newly released funds. With tighter oversight, stakeholders believe that the combined force of the restocking program, the upcoming Akii Bua Stadium construction, and city road rehabilitations will completely reshape Lango's economic landscape by the end of the year. Call for Strict Accountability Despite the widespread optimism, local civil society organizations and local chairpersons have cautioned the OPM to ensure the remaining beneficiary selection processes remain completely transparent. Leaders maintain that rigid verification is necessary to guarantee that vulnerable households receive their designated heifers without exploitation. As verification processes continue for the remaining households, the steady inflow of livestock is projected to permanently alter the financial fortunes of thousands of families across Lango.
