Lango Region Progress and Health Challenges: UGX 6.9B Sanitation Drive, Cultural Palace Breakthrough, and Mpox Containment

Phase Two of UGX 6.9 Billion Water and Sanitation Initiative Launched In an effort to bolster community health and improve educational retention, local leaders have initiated a UGX 6.9 Billion Water and Sanitation project targeting schools and vulnerable rural communities across the Lango sub-region. Building upon the successes of its first phase, this newly launched tier prioritizes the construction of modern institutional facilities. Notably, the infrastructure utilizes an inclusive structural design featuring access ramps and support rails to ensure children with physical disabilities and mobility challenges face zero boundaries to safe sanitation. Crucially, a major portion of the project targets the retention of the girl child in primary and secondary schools. Facilities are being built with integrated, secure changing rooms and washing units to foster proper menstrual hygiene management. According to local administrators, school children will be sensitized to act as "agents of change," taking water and hygiene knowledge from the classroom back into their respective households to build regional resilience. Health Authorities Contain Mpox Cluster at Otuke Government Prison On the healthcare front, immediate containment protocols were triggered in Otuke District following a localized viral outbreak. Four prisoners at the Otuke Government Prison tested positive for Mpox, prompting quick isolation measures. Otuke District Health Officer (DHO) Patrick Opio confirmed that medical teams ran diagnostic tests on 18 symptomatic inmates within the facility, returning four positive results. Epidemiological tracking traces the primary infection back to an external visitor who exhibited clear, visible symptoms of the virus during a recent visit to the prison block. Dr. Opio reassured the public that the infected patients are receiving localized treatment in an isolated recovery ward and that the wider facility is being monitored closely. Health departments have urged communities surrounding Lira and the broader sub-region to practice vigilance, avoid direct contact with individuals showing unfamiliar skin rashes, and quickly report suspected viral symptoms to nearest health centers.
