LIRA CITY, Uganda — July 8, 2026
Lira City authorities have launched a city-wide clean-up campaign aimed at improving sanitation, reducing pollution, and promoting a healthier environment for residents. The campaign, which began on Wednesday, brought together city officials, community leaders, business owners, and volunteers.
Speaking during the launch, city officials urged residents to participate by keeping their homes, markets, and business premises clean. They emphasized that proper waste disposal and regular cleaning of drainage channels are essential in preventing flooding and the spread of diseases.
The clean-up exercise covered major streets, markets, public parks, and taxi parks within the city. Volunteers collected plastic waste, cleared blocked drainage channels, and educated members of the public on the importance of environmental conservation.
Local business owners welcomed the initiative, saying a cleaner city would attract more customers and investors. "A clean environment benefits everyone. It improves public health and makes Lira a more attractive place to do business," said one trader at Lira Main Market.
Residents also expressed support for the campaign but called for more waste collection points and regular garbage collection services to ensure the city's cleanliness is maintained.
City authorities announced that similar clean-up exercises will be held every month and encouraged schools, community groups, and private organizations to take part. They said maintaining a clean city is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation from every resident.
The campaign is expected to contribute to a healthier environment, improve the city's appearance, and strengthen Lira City's reputation as one of Northern Uganda's fastest-growing urban centers.
