Mental Health Awareness Campaign Calls for Greater Support in the Lango Sub-region
Health professionals, community leaders, and mental health advocates are calling for increased awareness and support for mental health across the Lango sub-region, urging communities to end stigma and encourage people experiencing mental health challenges to seek professional help.
The call comes as healthcare workers report growing recognition of mental health as an essential part of overall well-being. Experts say conditions such as depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders can affect people of all ages and backgrounds, making community education and access to care increasingly important.
Speaking during a community health awareness event in Lira City, a mental health specialist emphasized that mental health should be treated with the same importance as physical health.
"Mental health is a vital part of our overall health. There is no shame in seeking help when someone is struggling emotionally or psychologically. Early support can make a significant difference," the specialist said.
Health workers noted that many people delay seeking treatment because of fear of discrimination, cultural misconceptions, or a lack of understanding about mental health conditions. They stressed that raising awareness can help reduce stigma and encourage more people to access available services.
Community outreach activities during the awareness campaign included public discussions, educational talks in schools, counseling sessions, and the distribution of information materials highlighting the signs of common mental health conditions and where to seek assistance.
Residents who attended the event welcomed the initiative, saying open conversations about mental health are helping to change attitudes within families and communities.
"People often suffer in silence because they fear being judged. These awareness campaigns show that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness," said Micheal Epila, a resident of Lira City.
Health experts encouraged families, schools, workplaces, and religious institutions to create supportive environments where individuals feel comfortable discussing emotional challenges without fear of stigma.
They also advised residents to maintain healthy lifestyles by getting adequate sleep, exercising regularly, eating nutritious meals, managing stress, and staying connected with supportive family members and friends. While these habits can support well-being, professionals emphasized that anyone experiencing persistent emotional distress should consult a qualified healthcare provider for assessment and appropriate care.
Mental health advocates are calling for continued investment in community education, counseling services, and mental health resources throughout the Lango sub-region. They believe that increased awareness, stronger community support, and improved access to mental healthcare can contribute to healthier individuals, stronger families, and more resilient communities.
As conversations around mental health continue to grow, stakeholders hope that greater understanding will encourage more people to seek help early and foster a culture of compassion and support across the Lango sub-region.
