Lira University Set to Launch Pioneer PhD and New Master’s Programmes Awaiting NCHE Nod
The developments were unveiled during a high-level verification meeting held at the university's Education Building. An expert team from the NCHE visited the campus to meticulously evaluate the institution's lecture facilities, laboratories, libraries, and human resource capacity required to support the doctoral curriculum. Expanding Academic Horizons Led by Senior Librarian Dr. Andrew Ojulong, the university's academic presentation highlighted a strong commitment to quality education and institutional excellence. The new curriculum roll-out heavily expands the capabilities of existing faculties and directly underpins the institution's strategic goals. According to Dr. Elizabeth Amongi, the Dean of the Faculty of Education, the faculty has actively given birth to three separate new faculties under an upgraded structural blueprint approved by the Ministry of Public Service. These include: Faculty of Science Faculty of Arts and Humanities Faculty of Agriculture Concurrently, the Faculty of Management Sciences which initially opened as a constituent college of Gulu University with just 66 students has grown to accommodate 821 students across 10 distinct undergraduate and postgraduate courses. This rapid growth has paved the way for the implementation of the highly anticipated PhD in Public Administration and Management and the PhD in Business Administration. Upcoming doctoral fields will also encompass the PhD in Education and the PhD in Health Sciences. Strict Compliance with National Standards Speaking during the verification exercise, the NCHE Team Leader, Assoc. Prof. Atibuni Zami Dennis, reminded the university that statutory accreditation remains mandatory under the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001.Professor Atibuni urged the university staff to execute the upcoming curriculum in strict accordance with national guidelines. He emphasized that the proposed postgraduate options are being rigidly vetted against Uganda's National Minimum Standards and must align with the Competence-Based Education and Training (CBET) framework Shs 65.7 Billion Financial BackingTo ensure these advanced research courses are smoothly run, the Lira University Council has drastically boosted its funding. Under the leadership of Chairman Mr. Geoffrey David Opiokello, the council approved a total annual budget estimate of UGX 65,760,613,715. This is a massive leap from the previous fiscal year's allocation of UGX 28.7 billion.The Chairperson of the Finance, Planning, and Investment Committee, Mr. Timothy Jokkene Okee, confirmed that the central government will directly provide UGX 56 billion. The remaining funds will be generated through internal user fees from the Lira University Teaching Hospital, research ethics committees, and external donor funding. A significant portion of this budget will directly construct central lecture complexes, medical intern residences, and an upgraded multi-functional library facility to anchor the new PhD researchers.With the physical verification complete, the university administration and prospective doctoral students now eagerly await the official, final blessing from the NCHE board to commence admissions.
