CREATING A NEW FOREST IN MBALE, UPDF AND GREENING UGANDA CAMPAIGN TARGET 5000 FRUIT AND INDIGENOUS TREES

By Goodluck Musinguzi
As part of Uganda People’s Defence Forces9UPDF)  2022 Tarehe Sita operations on the Greening Uganda Campaign, more than 5000 fruit and indigenous trees will be grown in this October rainy season. Tree seedlings were loaded and delivered to Elgon regions on 21st October 2022.
“We launched the operations in the dry season, and hardly could we have grown trees by then. It’s now since it’s raining to have our operations continuing,” according to Maj. Kashaka Tumwine CIMIC UPDF contact person.
This Elgon tree-growing campaign is sustainably being implemented by Million Trees International Organisation (Greening Uganda Campaign). Using their nursery beds, a number of trees will continue to be grown in the region.
“am born in this Elgon region, and I have been seeing abnormal Climate changes like floods, and landslides happening in our region. We need to cover all hills in Budduda and other regions with trees. We shall monitor all trees grown for future evaluation,” said Maj. Manyani at UPDF 3rd Division Mbale.
“restoration needs time. It’s not a one-day operation. Our activities will continue and we’re identifying more institutions like schools, churches and mosques to be the best beneficiaries. Government lands and road reserves will all get covered with trees. All trees grown must be protected from external pressures, that’s why we need all GPS coordinates.
UPDF are a good partner. We need more serious institutions in our operations,” says Dr Jibril founding director of Million Trees International Organisation (Greening Uganda Campaign).
This project is aiming at increasing tree cover in Elgon Region to minimize abnormal Climate changes. It’s aiming at involving local people in Climate Change Resilient Measures. It is running every rainy season as more trees are donated and grown in the region.
UPDF 2022 T6 operations on the Greening Uganda Campaign resume with excitement in Elgon Region.*
