MINISTRY OF HEALTH MEETS DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS TO DISCUSS POST-EBOLA RECOVERY PLAN

World Health Organization joined the Ministry of Health and other development partners to discuss and endorse the post-ebola recovery plan to be implemented in 180 days in the country(Uganda). Hon Jane Ruth Aceng, Minister of Health said, this morning we engaged with our partners who were instrumental in controlling the Ebola Outbreak in Uganda in a record time.

“The meeting was aimed at discussing and endorsing the Post Ebola Recovery Plan which will be implemented for 180 days. The plan will also address key existing gaps for the research and development of medical counter-measures against the Sudan ebolavirus species, including clinical testing of 3 vaccine candidates, evaluation of therapeutics and validation of diagnostics”.

Yonas Tegegn Woldermariam, World Health Organization Representative in Uganda said priorities include enhancing surveillance, infection control and community engagement to prevent future outbreaks. WHO Uganda today joined the Ministry of Health and development to discuss and endorse the post-Ebola recovery plan to be implemented in the next 180 days in the country.

Hon Jane Ruth Aceng said, “In the upcoming 180 days, as we will be taking actions to ensure that there is no resurgence of ebola cases, we will also strengthen our health system to manage the existing health issues and prevent future outbreaks”.

The US Ambassador in Uganda appreciated Ministry of Health for accountability for past health emergencies and planning for future outbreaks. I trust that through the ebola recovery plan outlined today Uganda will become stronger and better prepared to respond to future health threats like ebola.

In Liberia, the Post Ebola Recovery Social Investment Fund(PERSIF) project targeted Ebola-affected communities, especially along the borders of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone seeking to contribute to the availability of selected basic social services, restoration of livelihoods and economic opportunities.

It is expected to play a catalytic role in improving community response to outbreaks, thereby contributing to inclusive growth, gender equality and poverty reduction in the three affected countries. The project seeks to support the National Post-Ebola Recovery Plans of the target countries, complementing and working in coordination with other partners supporting transition and recovery. It will foster economic and social inclusion and gender equality by strengthening the financial foundation of the poor, and women in particular, to carry out economic activities, developing skills and access to markets while reinforcing their autonomy and community resilience to shocks.
