Kasimeri primary school, Karamoja sub-region’s perennial representative at the national music, dance and drama festivals has vowed to win this year’s competitions.
The school’s officials made their intent known after they hosted the zonal competitions to get participants for the district level festivities slated for July 30, 2022.
Joseph Apedu, the deputy head teacher who also doubles as dean of studies at Kasimeri primary school, said they side stepped some aspects of the zonal competition because as consistent regional champions since 2016, the Ministry of Education and Sports has already assured their position to compete at the national competition.
“We have picked two schools to represent the zone at the district competitions since the ministry through Moroto district told us to give chance to other schools to showcase and develop their talent. We will wait for the big show,” he said.
Prior to the COVID-19 disruptions, the Education Ministry has been organizing music, dance and drama contests for primary school children.
Buganda Road Primary school were the last national champions in 2019 in a competition that had 56 primary schools participating, meanwhile Stella Maries primary school from Nkokonjeru scooped the 2018 accolade.
The entertaining festivities center around drama, creative dance, western set pieces, traditional dance, folk songs and storytelling.
In the Sub county competitions at Kasimeri Primary school main hall at which the children brought out the colorful Karamoja cultural regalia, song lyrics and effervescent dance style in full display, Nadunget primary school emerged in the first position with 90 points, beating Nawanatau which got 85 points to the second position.
A 14-year-old Jemima Akello, a pupil of Kasimeri Primary school is already exuding with excitement, revealing that she expects a lot of opportunities to come their way as a result of the festivals.
Akello asked the District education department to continue supporting co-curricular activities and provide schools with instruments to help children develop their immense raw talent in music, dance and drama.
“We are so passionate about music but some of our schools lack costumes that pupils can use when such festivals come. Let the district help us get them,” Akello said.
Kasimeri Primary school’s enrolment before the Covid-19 pandemic was 1,600 pupils and when schools reopened after lifting of the lockdown restrictions, Kasimari registered more than 1,100 primary school pupils on the first day without any cases of teenage pregnancy or child mothers.
