The National Forestry Authority (NFA) has hosted a team from Million Trees International, a local environment conservation organization to discuss the implementation of the greening Uganda campaign.
The meeting at the NFA head offices in Bugolobi, Kampala on Monday also explored ways on how to better protect Uganda’s forest reserves.
The officials discussed modalities meant to set up clear working structures between NFA and Million Trees International to promote collaborative forest management in a private public partnership.
Million Trees International is using locally based approaches to involve people in climate change resilient measures via sensitization and active involvement in tree growing for restoration and Agroforestry Programs.
“we appreciate that NFA has lived to protect Central Forest Reserves in Uganda, and this is why natural forests are still existing in Uganda amidst political challenges and little budget,” Jibril Owomugisha, the founding director of Million Trees International said.
He thanked the existing agencies for having managed to protect Uganda’s forests, and stressed that their meeting with NFA could help to solve a number of challenges exerting negative pressure on the forestry sector.
“Greening Uganda Campaign is here for everyone to actively participate in Uganda’s Eco-Community restoration,” stressed Owomugisha.
Tom Okello, the NFA Executive Director, commended Million Trees International for clearly doing a great job on community sensitization towards developing a positive mindset on environmental protection.
“We only need to identify which target groups of people should receive this information for sustainable results and via which methods of communication. The largest group of people are still in the past era and rarely can easily get the information via Media, or Televisions,” he said.
Okello added: “We believe they can listen through communal gatherings, religious organized sessions and other locally based sensitization Programs.”
Okello said they need Million Trees International for collaborative management of forests and public awareness, especially on involving local people in climate change resilient measures.
