Residents of Bushunga B village were Monday evening left with grief after a 17 year old boy was buried alive by landslide following a heavy down pour. The deceased has been identified as Harelimana Julius, son of Ngendahimana Silver, a resident of Bushunga A village Busengo parish Nyarubuye subcounty Kisoro district

Bushunga A village LC1 chairperson Sebikari Gregory confirmed the incident and said that the deceased was killed by the landslide during the heavy down pour that started at around 5pm lasting for two hours. He said that the deceased was grazing the goats at the time of Incident.

According to Gregory, the residents who were passing by after the rainfall saw the deceased’s goats strayed in crops and called the owner all in vain. The residents felt suspicious after seeing heavy debris which they uncovered and retrieved the body of the deceased later.

He said that the body was handed over to the family members and the burial is scheduled for today 26th October, 2022. He also said that the last evening downpour destroyed several gardens of crops, houses and left roads from the area in sorry state.

Nyarubuye LC3 chairperson Ndibyariye Ernest Bucholi described the incident of losing such a person at a young age as very unfortunate. He said that Bushunga B village is prone to landslides and floods due to its landscape revealing that most of residents spend the whole day clearing mud and debris from their homes after rains.

He said that about 50 houses from his area were buried by mudslides following the same downpour. He advised his residents living on high altitude to always remain vigilant and seek shelters elsewhere in safe places during downpours.
