KOTIDO: SUNDAY, JULY 24, 2022

The site clearance for construction of a 2km long water dam to support pastoralism has commenced in Maaru sub-county in Kotido district.

The dam named “Sinat” is being constructed with funding from the ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries.

The sh25bn dam is planned to have a 14-metre high embankment and carry a volume of up to 2.8bn litres of water.

Construction woks are projected to end in December 2022.

According to Lotee Paul Komol, the Kotido district LC5 chairman, this is the first step in achieving a long term dream of settling the region’s herdsmen.

“When the construction is finally done, I will rest from moving to our neighbors of Teso, Acholic and Lango solving issues of our people who go looking for pasture and water for their animals,” Komol intimated.

The Chairman said this will also boost crop production since the area and its surrounding look very fertile.

He said Kotido district is the biggest supplier of agricultural produce in the region when the season is favourable.

“You cannot believe that our people are now migrating to settle in the bushes to do more farming. If it was not for the unpredictable rains, our crops would do better than they look now,” Komol added”.

He however indicated that settlement around the dam will be restricted due to the high water volume that’s expected to be in it.

Recently, two people drowned in Kaoyangor dam while grazing and it is against this background that the authorities want to engage communities on the possible dangers of staying close to a water dam.
