FARMING RESUMES IN KITGUM AS KARAMOJONG WARRIORS LEAVE

Farming has resumed in Namokora sub-county and the Naiboring sub-county of Orom East constituency and Kiteny and Namokora town council in Chua East constituency, Kitgum district after Karamojong worriers left the area.

The warriors had invaded those sub counties in early January 2022, looking for pasture and water for their cattle but their severely disrupted farming in by the local community in the process.

Christine Acan, 30, a resident of Onyala village in Orom sub-county, said following protracted meetings between the warriors leaders and the security team headed by the Kitgum Resident district commissioner, William Kumakech, she is now able to go to the Namokora communal land to cultivate.

She thanked the resident district commissioner and the security personnel for holding border meetings to resolve the Karamojong question.

Acan appealed for more deployment of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces at the border points, especially in the area were farm activities is taking place so as to safeguard farmers and their farms.

Geoffrey Opyet, the LC3 chairperson for Namokora sub-county, said many cows and goats were stolen during the Karamojong invasion which also severely disrupted first season of farming.

He disclosed that security deployment at hot spots where the armed nomads pass from have helped to reassure farmers of their safety and security.

He called for more vigilance from the communities as they carry out farm activities and recommended that a permanent barracks of the UPDF be created in the area.

William Komakech, the Kitgum resident district commissioner, advised farmers to plant a lot of simsim during the rainy season and liaise with the security forces to safeguard their produce at harvest time.

The RDC told the local defense unit and the village vigilantes deployed at the border points of Karamoja and south Sudan to intensify patrols so as to protect the community bordering Karamoja and south Sudan.
