United Nations Children’s Fund has vowed to continue supporting the Nutrition program to the children and women in the Karamoja Sub Region as it marked the World Humanitarian day.
In its Tweet, UNICEF announced that it received the generous contribution of US$11M from Foreign, commonwealth & Development Office in UK, US$2M through @UNICEFUganda & US$9M through @WFP towards life-saving nutrition, food assistance & protection to #refugees, especially vulnerable children & women in Karamoja.
“Humanitarians work in some of the world’s most dangerous places, to create a safer & better world for everyone irrespective of who they are. To effectively deliver, they too need a safe environment & protection from harm, the tweet read.”
It added that Humanitarians represent hope for many of the world’s less fortunate seeking assistance. Too often this work surfaces with a lot of challenges. It Takes a Village to offer the much-needed aid. The support of communities, leaders, government & donors makes the task simpler.
Meanwhile in its tweet, the British High Commission in Uganda said it is via @UNICEFUganda helping to mitigate the impact of drought & food insecurity on women & children in Karamoja via life-saving health & nutrition support.

Whereas back in Karamoja, UNICEF Representative in Uganda, Mr. Munir Safieldin, UNICEFAfrica ‘s Emergency Specialist, Joan Kipwola & Moroto field office Chief Rebecca Kwagala visited 5-year-old Lucy, a beneficiary who with UNICEF’s support is under foster care in Kotido District.

Mr. Munir commended Kotido District Community Services department for their work and continuous child protection services.
The Karamoja Nutrition Programme which was being implemented by UNICEF and WFP from 2018 – 2021 and funded by UK Aid aimed at strengthening the Government’s health system to improve the delivery of nutrition services in Karamoja.
The program specifically focused to Develop the skills of nutritionists and health workers, Improve the treatment of severe acute malnutrition in hospitals and health centres, Generate evidence to improve the design of nutrition services, Procure and manage quality nutrition supplies, Provide more effective nutrition leadership and coordination across all Government departments and partners.
Malnutrition remains widespread in Karamoja and is caused by multiple, related factors, including lack of food or limited access to adequate food, disease, poverty, illiteracy and climate change, among others.
With this aid, the Sustainable Development Goals SDG 2 (end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture); SDG 3 (ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages); and SDG 5 (achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls) are going to be achieved.
