Isaiah Lokech, the LCV councilor representing Kapeta sub county in Kotido district has urged farmers in Karamoja sub-region to utilize the current rain season to enhance agricultural production.

“Go out, especially men, plant more crops like millet, maize, sweet potatoes, simsim and beans. Stop leaving farm work to only women,” he said.

Lokech was speaking during a security meeting at Kacheri sub-county headquarters that brought together leaders from Acholi, Lango, Teso and Karamoja.

Residents in Kacheri sub-county, Kapeta, Maaru sub-county and Kacheri town council also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, one resident of Kacheri town council, Mary, complained that Karimojong men had left the entire responsibility of crop cultivation to women while they go out to drink alcohol and rear animals.

She called upon the stakeholders to support Karamoja by sensitizing men to appreciate garden work and participate in cultivation and weeding of their crops so that food production is increased in the reion.

She was backed by Paul Adia, the LC3 chairperson of Maaru sub-county, who cautioned men to stop dodging farm work, challenging them to make equal contribution in Agriculture in order to fight hunger in the region.

Adia also stressed the need to empower the youth with modern methods of farming and establishment of irrigation facilities, saying it would be the best way to support their farmers in Karamoja.

Ambrose Onoria, the Resident district commissioner of Kotido district, urged Karamoja people to make good use of Government projects that aim to change their life like the Parish development model.

Onoria said laziness will kill the youth and the future of Karamoja if the people continue to view agriculture as a dirty job.

“It is not true that agriculture is a dirty job. Human life is based on Agricultural activities like farming, so, you should embrace it,” he said.
