People from Teso sub region have been asked to utilize the current rains to plant fast growing crops in this second season.
Juliet Achayo Lodou the Ngora county member of parliament in Ngora district passed the message in Kobuin sub county on Tuesday while meeting the football players which she gave balls before going to monitor 90 groups that she gave poultry worth shs.40 million last months.
Achayo said the first season harvest on this year is the worst in the last five years in the region and as youth the young people should be in the forefront of a production given their age.
She said sports need people who are strong and feed well, so youths should get busy in the gardens during morning then in evening they practice their sports activities.
“The meteorologists asked us to prepare our gardens as they forecast rains to be heavy in this month of August and their prophecy has come true but because some of us took it for granted, Achayo said.”
Achayo said Ngora was fortunate because it is a leading producer of sweet potatoes in the country which by God’s grace matures in two to three months.
“So I expect my people to invest their time in production because the greatest enemy of life is hunger as it affects other pillars of development, struggle and put down beans, peas, soya beans, heap our potatoes and for the groups I gave chicken last time ensure you are in touch with the veterinary officers for proper treatment and record keepings of the poultry, Achayo added.”
John Stephen Ekoom the Ngora resident district commissioner (RDC) said as chairperson security people of Ngora need to have food in their households as it is the most valued weapon in any struggle.
Ekoom said the region due to poor weather pattern experienced the worst harvest but those whom God favoured with little should not sell because of attractive prices in the market .
“I have given instructions to the chief administrative officer to ensure the district production office through its extension workers should guide farmers . There are some extension workers whom surprisingly the communities they meant to serve don’t know them and I cannot accept this, Ekoom said.”
Rose Ajore of Kadok village in Atoot sub county said they are ready for the season but the challenge is seeds due the effect of poor or no harvest in the first season.
Sam Oluka one of the foitballer’s said they are engaged in brick laying and also heap potatoes.
Am happy for Achayo’s guidance to us because some of us also waste time in ludos and gambling, Oluka said.”
Charles Peter Obelon one of MP Achayo’s political assistants said people are taking advice and are seriously heaping potatoes.
Obelon said as Ngora is pronounced for yellow potatoes which are fast maturing by November they have enough if rains favorably continue.
Teso region experiences a humid and hot climate, receiving bimodal rainfall with an annual average between 1000 to 1350 mm, much of which is received between March to May. There are decreasing to light showers between June and August and heavier rains again between Septembers to November.
